RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our security, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
