Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
