The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.
He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.
"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, aside from his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
