Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the ability to contest particular decisions from the official, echoing the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
